The GS1 Digital Link Opportunity

A 50-year-old technology — the barcode — is being quietly upgraded into a gateway for everything a product knows about itself. Here's how the GS1 Digital Link standard works, why the 2027 transition matters, and how a brand turns it into a real advantage.

The problem with the barcode we have

For fifty years, the UPC barcode has been a license plate: a string of digits that tells a checkout system which product this is and what it costs. That's all it can do. It can't carry a product's ingredients, its sourcing, its certifications, or a link to anything — and today's shopper, standing in an aisle with a smartphone, increasingly wants exactly that information before they buy.

Brands have tried to bridge the gap by adding a separate QR code to packaging. But that clutters the label, confuses point-of-sale scanning, and adds a second symbol doing a job the main barcode should just… do.

What GS1 Digital Link actually is

GS1 is the global non-profit standards body that manages the barcode. Its answer is GS1 Digital Link — a standardized way of writing a product's identity as a web address and encoding it in a modern 2D code (a QR code or Data Matrix). In plain terms: it turns the barcode into a link, without giving up anything the old barcode did.

The clever part is that one code now serves two audiences from the same symbol:

  • Point-of-sale and supply chain scan it exactly like today's barcode — the checkout extracts the product identity offline, no internet required.
  • A consumer's phone scans the same code and is taken to a brand-controlled web destination: ingredients, nutrition, how-to videos, promotions, authenticity, recycling instructions — whatever the brand chooses to show.

Because the destination is resolved online, the brand can change what's behind the code at any time — new promotion, updated recipe, recall notice — without ever reprinting the package.

Why 2027 is the number that matters

The industry has set a Sunrise Date of 2027 — the target by which retailers worldwide upgrade their point-of-sale systems to read 2D codes. It won't happen overnight, and the old UPC won't vanish, but the direction is set and the budgets are already moving. That deadline is the gift: for a brand deciding whether to invest in richer product data, the transition is coming regardless, which means the internal business case is half-made before you walk in the room.

The part most people miss: every product becomes an API

Because a Digital Link is structured data, not just a URL, different apps can read the same code and be routed to different information. A retailer's system, a supply-chain tool, and a third-party nutrition or health app can each scan the same product and pull exactly the subset they care about. In effect, every product gains its own tiny API — and that is the door to spatial computing.

The web page a phone opens today is the simplest expression of that identity. The same identifier, read by an Apple Vision Pro tomorrow, can open a full spatial layer: information floating beside the product, a package that unfolds into a 3D explanation, a provenance map you can walk around. Same standard, same identifiers — a richer surface. A brand that structures its product data well for the barcode transition is, without extra work, structuring it for the spatial one.

The 2027 transition converts a slow, education-heavy sale into a time-bound one: hundreds of thousands of businesses must move, which shortens sales cycles and creates recurring implementation and resolver-management revenue. A partner who can offer not just compliance but a compelling experience behind the code differentiates in a field that's mostly selling plumbing.
  • For the brands they serve — the barcode becomes an owned, direct-to-consumer channel with no media spend. Because content is resolved online, one code can be updated forever without reprinting — retiring the cost of packaging revisions for promotions or corrections, and consolidating multiple on-pack codes into one. Richer product views are associated with higher engagement and conversion, and the scan itself returns first-party analytics (counts, locations, timing) a static barcode never could.
  • For the consumer — the payoff that drives all the others. One scan surfaces the information people increasingly expect before they buy: ingredients and allergens, sourcing and authenticity, usage and recycling — in their language, on the device already in their hand, with no app to download. Better-informed shoppers decide faster and trust the brand more, and that trust is what turns a one-time scan into a repeat purchase.
